Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the signing of nine agreements worth approximately $440 million between Pakistani and Chinese pharmaceutical companies, describing the development as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral economic cooperation and advancing the next phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC 2.0).
The agreements were signed during the Pakistan-China Business-to-Business Investment Conference on Pharmaceutical, Healthcare and Biotechnology held in Islamabad. The event brought together leading pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, healthcare investors, and government representatives from both countries to explore new avenues of collaboration.
Addressing the conference, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the agreements are expected to translate into practical investment projects that will strengthen Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector. He noted that cooperation with Chinese companies would support the local production of life-saving medicines and vaccines, promote technology transfer, encourage research and development, and create opportunities for Pakistan to become a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports.
The signed agreements cover a wide range of areas, including vaccine production, biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, hepatitis prevention, and advanced healthcare technologies. Officials believe these partnerships will improve local production capacity while reducing dependence on imported medicines and encouraging innovation within Pakistan’s healthcare industry.
The prime minister also highlighted the participation of around 300 Chinese delegates at the conference, saying their presence reflects the strong confidence of Chinese businesses in Pakistan’s economic potential. He described China as Pakistan’s most trusted strategic partner and emphasized that private-sector collaboration will play a key role in expanding investment under CPEC 2.0.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to foreign investors, Shehbaz Sharif assured Chinese companies that Pakistan remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of Chinese nationals working on investment projects across the country. He said the government would continue taking all necessary measures to facilitate investment and provide a secure environment for ongoing and future collaborations.
The conference is being viewed as another important step in Pakistan’s efforts to attract foreign direct investment, strengthen industrial cooperation with China, and expand the country’s pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors through international partnerships. Government officials expect several of the agreements to move into the implementation phase in the coming months, creating new business opportunities and supporting long-term economic growth.
